The drink. The line. The joint. The bump. The high. Then everything is ok. It levels out. You can deal with it. The regulation and being able to deal with life. You repeat this cycle again and again. Being able to deal with life. But what happens when the level fades? When the high wears off and you’re left chasing the next fix, the next escape? The cycle continues, each time demanding a little more, offering a little less. The regulation becomes dependence, the dealing becomes desperation. And life? Life waits, untouched, unlived, while you’re caught in the undertow of the next hit.

As someone who has worked with addicts and in recovery, I understand the allure of the high, the temporary escape from the challenges of life. But I also know the devastating consequences of addiction, the toll it takes on individuals, families, and communities.
